Tropical Fish Collage
Together in first grade we read the book, "Hooray for Fish," by Lucy Cousins. This book has really beautifully patterned fish, coral and sea plants. First graders have started to practice drawing fish, and have made some textured paper to create our collages from. Below you will see images of the live stream aquariums that we have been watching while we work. It is very inspiring to see real fish swimming in their environment. Stay tuned for some updated works from the first grade.

Abstract Art, Concentric Circles and Kandinsky
In first grade, the students were introduced to Abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. They each created their own work of art based off Kandinsky's concentric circles (Farbstudie: Quadrate mit konzentrischen Ringen), and had LOTS of fun mixing colors and creating new ones. For the hallway display I chose to have the students make 2 additional small 5x5 square pieces to create an installation as a whole grade level. I love how this turned out!

Paul Klee and Free-Form Shaped Characters
In first grade, we looked at artwork by the Swiss artists, Paul Klee. We are also working really hard on creating free-form shapes. Our projects this 9 weeks will be to create an original character by using a brand new free-form shape that we have created.
Below is an example of some of the lines used to create our original free-form shapes. Keep checking in for some updates! |
This is our first examples of our characters. This is a super creative example by I. Way to go!
