Abstract Sculpture &
Barbara Hepworth
Fifth grade students are learning about the abstract artist Barbara Hepworth. She was a sculpture artists who created subtractive sculptures with voids. The fifth graders have also learned about anthropomorphic shapes as being "human like" or suggesting the human form.
Students have taken an image of a person or group of people from a magazine. From there the students outline the shapes and add voids either where shown from the photograph or perhaps where a face may be. They then draw the shape which is an abstract form. Finally the students are given a block of clay to form and create their own abstract sculpture. Check out some of their work in progress. |

POP Art - Roy Lichtenstein
The fifth graders were introduced to POP artist Roy Lichtenstein. The students learned about appropriation and benday dots. Instead of using JUST primary colors, like Lichtenstein did, we opened it up to any color and I really think these look even more interesting. Check out the slide show to see the different steps.
